North Park's 1961 open-air rink

The North Park Ice Rink opened to the public on February 18, 1961, after two and a half years of construction, and at the time it was considered one of the largest outdoor skating rinks in the country. The sheet measures 209 by 120 feet and sits on terrazzo flooring imported from Italy, laid and polished before the ice went in.

Beside the ice stands a Swiss chalet-style clubhouse of native stone and reinforced concrete pillars, with a lounge and fireplace, a snack bar and an upper observation area. The refrigeration machinery is housed inside the clubhouse and reaches the rink through its own tunnel. In the 2000-2001 season the rink drew more than 30,000 visitors.

Allegheny County opens its rinks every winter for lessons, stick time, hockey clinics and public skating, usually through mid-March, weather permitting. The rink is one of North Park's draws alongside golf, tennis, hiking and one of the region's largest swimming pools.
