Mt. Lebanon's Frank Gill Ice Rink

The Frank Gill Ice Rink sits in Mt. Lebanon Park just off Cedar Boulevard, next to the municipality's Olympic-size summer swimming pool. It opened in 1977 with a regulation 200-by-85-foot main rink and a 60-by-80-foot studio rink, both on a concrete base that makes cleaning and freezing them simpler, and it offers competitive, recreational and instructional skating.

The Mt. Lebanon Hockey Association fields teams at both middle schools plus junior varsity and varsity teams at the high school. The Blue Devils play as a club sport in the PIHL and have won state championships in 1976 and 2006.

For generations of local skaters the rink is a familiar place: the smell of fresh, cold ice, little kids squealing with delight and sometimes terror, the crowd circling to classic rock over the speakers, and, one longtime skater warns, a mass-snacking session whenever the Zamboni comes out.
