An outdoor rink around a 60-foot Christmas tree in the PPG Place plaza, beside Market Square
Currently out of season The UPMC Rink at PPG Place opens for the 2026-27 season on November 13, 2026 and runs through February 28, 2027. Official schedule update
Every winter, from mid-November until late February or early March, the plaza between Third and Fourth Avenues becomes The UPMC Rink at PPG Place, an outdoor rink in the middle of PPG Plaza beside Market Square. The rink first opened in December 2001, and Highwoods Properties bought PPG Place in September 2011.
For the 2015-16 season the original ice was replaced with a new $1 million rink measuring 116 by 116 feet, 25% larger than before, 67% larger than the Rockefeller Center rink and two-thirds the size of an NHL sheet. At its centre stands a 60-foot Christmas tree on a 28-foot base, replaced in 2021 with an LED tree that can put on light shows. Each year a child who is a cancer survivor lights the tree, in a ceremony held with the American Cancer Society's Tribute of Lights.
Magic Ice USA manages the rink, which keeps more than 700 pairs of rental skates, and The Berg Chicken and Pizza on site serves hot chocolate to skaters.
