New Kensington's two-rink arena, once Valley Sports Complex, home of the Mighty Penguins sled hockey team.
Pittsburgh Ice Arena on Craigdell Road began as Valley Sports Complex. Planning started in 2002, and legal and zoning issues delayed its opening until 2003. The facility went into receivership in 2009 amid financial difficulties, and in 2012 it was sold to Pittsburgh Ice Arena LP, a group that included former NHL player Alain Lemieux, who planned a significant refurbishment and a home for his hockey academy.
Now owned by Black Bear Sports Group, the 90,000-square-foot arena has two NHL-size rinks operating year round, a concession area and a meeting and party room.
It is home ice for the Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey team, the Pittsburgh Speed Skating Club, the Plum and Burrell hockey associations, the Pittsburgh Huskies and Pittsburgh Stars AAA, and the Burrell, Fox Chapel Area, Knoch and Plum high school hockey teams.
