The Gallivan Center's public ice rink is the winter centerpiece of the John W. Gallivan Utah Center, a downtown Salt Lake City plaza whose amphitheater, banquet center and art installations host concerts, festivals and holiday celebrations. The rink and its colorful lights turn the block into a winter wonderland, and revenue from the rink and rentals pays for the Center's mostly free public events.
The plaza grew from Block 57, bounded by State Street, Main Street, 200 South and 300 South, which the city's Redevelopment Agency began acquiring in the early 1980s. The three-acre public space was completed in 1993 and named for John W. Gallivan, a former publisher of the Salt Lake Tribune, and in 2002 it was a key venue for the Olympic Winter Games.
A 2010 renovation after more than a decade of heavy public use included an ice rink reconfiguration along with amphitheater expansion and technical upgrades. Skates are included in admission, and sizes run from a toddler's 6 to a men's 15.
