Built where the Bountiful Bubble rink stood
Before the South Davis Recreation Center, Bountiful residents swam, worked out and skated at the Bountiful Bubble, on the ground where the center now stands. That old Bountiful Recreation Center held ice skating and hockey for 32 years and was torn down in 2006 as work went on to build the new center.
The new building, three stories and about 160,000 square feet of brick and steel, was planned around an Olympic-size ice rink, competition pools, a gym and exercise rooms, and Davis County paid $2 million of the rink's cost from tourism-related taxes. The South Davis Recreation District, organized after a 2005 vote of residents, owns and runs it for North Salt Lake, Woods Cross, Bountiful, West Bountiful and Centerville.
The rink serves both leisure and competitive skating and hosts skating competitions, hockey leagues and community events. The Davis County Youth Hockey Association runs its learn-to-play and summer skills hockey here, and the Bountiful Senior Hockey League plays on the same ice.
