San Diego's year-round Kroc rink
Joan Kroc entrusted The Salvation Army with $90 million to build the first Kroc Center, in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego; she died a little more than a year after it opened. The 132,000-square-foot center sits on 12 acres, and its ice arena, open year round on an NHL-size rink, is the only one centrally located in the heart of the city.
Hockey runs from first strides to league play. Youth in-house hockey is played under USA Hockey rules, certified USA Hockey coaches teach the learn-to-play classes, adults can join one of five league divisions or weekly pick-up hockey for ages 18 and up, and skate-and-shoot sessions are open to all ages.
Figure skaters get specialty classes and practice ice, ice dancing is sold by the month with guest passes to freestyle and public sessions, and first-timers can try a Beginning Skate class on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Do-it-yourself skating parties pair a party room with skate time during public sessions.
