The Poway rink the Anaheim Ducks rebuilt as the San Diego Gulls' practice home, with boards from Honda Center.
Poway ICE began becoming the home of the San Diego Gulls on March 17, 2015, when the Poway City Council unanimously approved the plans. The project took 294 days and a $2 million investment by the Ducks, and the AHL club officially moved its practices here on January 5, 2016. Its dasher boards came from Honda Center, where they had seen hundreds of Ducks games.
From the road it is easy to miss, a commercial-looking building roughly 45 minutes from Pechanga Arena San Diego. Behind the double doors to the Gulls' private space are a dedicated team locker room, an auxiliary locker room, dressing and changing rooms and coaching offices. "At the time, it was a better setup than Anaheim had," one Gulls staffer recalled.
Less than two years after the Gulls arrived, the Anaheim Ducks bought the facility and added it to The Rinks, bringing youth and adult hockey, figure skating, learn-to-skate and learn-to-play programs.
