Mira Mesa's 1975 rink, rebuilt on vinyl in 2025

San Diego Ice Arena was built in 1975 in Mira Mesa, then surrounded by canyons; in the 1990s Hage Elementary School went up next door and housing filled in around the rink. The early years were not easy, and the rink was largely a passion project of its previous owners. Brothers Philip and Mark Linssen, who had been involved in managing the rink, invested in 2000, and the Linssen family owns it today with Philip as CEO and Mark as COO.

Its single 200-by-85-foot sheet has slightly rounded corners. It is the home rink of the San Diego Figure Skating Club, established in 1939 and one of the oldest skating clubs in California, and home ice for the Central Cathedral Jets, a team of players from 10 San Diego high schools that in 2024 beat Stockton St. Mary's 7-3 to become the first San Diego team to reach the USA Hockey High School National Championships. Michelle Ford started coaching ice dancing and freestyle here in 1979 and directed the annual Christmas show in 2002.

In September 2025 the arena reopened after a six-month closure for a makeover that included a vinyl system to keep the ice smooth. "With the vinyl, we always have clear lines; maybe kids won't be offside as much," customer lead Angel Lara joked.
