San Diego's rink at the heart of Westfield UTC, skating since 1979 as the Ice Capades Chalet and Ice Town.
UTC Ice Sports Center opened in 1979 inside the brand-new University Towne Center as the Ice Capades Chalet, one of San Diego's first rinks of its kind. Locals came to know it as the Ice Chalet through the 1980s and 1990s, and in 1981 it hosted the ISI World Recreational Team Championships, confirming it as a regional figure skating venue.
Skate clubs and hockey groups began forming regular programs in the 1990s. In 2000 new owners rebranded it La Jolla Ice Town, expanding skating and hockey with youth development, adult leagues and early travel teams.
Refreshed Learn to Skate programs and a figure skating academy followed between 2012 and 2015, and youth and adult hockey grew with the Piranhas teams, larger leagues and clinics. Future NHL players learned the game here as kids, among them Minnesota Wild defenseman Zeev Buium. For nearly five decades the rink has sat at the center of University City daily life.
