Clearwater's one-sheet arena that added an NHL-size rink

Clearwater Ice Arena is one of three Tampa Bay ICE facilities, a group whose rinks have served the Tampa Bay area since 1987 and now total five sheets of ice. For more than 20 years before 2013, the Tampa Bay Skating Academy club operated out of Clearwater Ice Arena, which at that time had only one sheet. In October 2015 the arena announced a new NHL-sized rink; Manuel Rose, the Tampa Bay Lightning's official radiologist, was the man behind the build, with completion expected by summer 2016.

The addition went up beside the existing rink and training facility, with almost 23,000 square feet of insulated metal panels installed vertically on the framing, for use by the community and area schools. Before the second sheet, figure skaters had to step onto the ice first thing in the morning to get practice time before hockey players from all over came in to practice and compete.

Today the arena runs recreational and competitive figure skating alongside learn-to-play hockey and youth and adult leagues for all skills and abilities, coached by USA Hockey certified staff and Olympic, World and National level instructors. The Tampa Bay Skating Club counts Clearwater Ice Arena among its associate rinks, together with TBSA Countryside and the TGH Ice Plex in Brandon.
