The igloo by I-75
Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex is known from the outside for its distinctive dome, which gave it its original name, J.P. Igloo, and for the larger-than-life hockey player skating out of the wall toward Interstate 75. When a local paper toured it in 2014, the building was 15 years old.
The 115,000-square-foot building has two NHL-size rinks, a 13,500-square-foot roller and ball hockey rink, 15 locker rooms, party rooms, a fitness center and the Precision Edge Hockey Pro Shop, with netting above the glass to protect spectators from wayward pucks.
It has drawn notable skaters. Three pairs of Sochi-bound figure skaters and U.S. hockey's Lamoureux twins trained here before the 2014 Olympics, and tennis great Martina Navratilova played two seasons, 2007 to 2009, with the rink's Ms Conduct adult women's team. It has been home rink for the Gulf Coast Flames youth program, the Manatee County Admirals and Sarasota County Rampage high school teams and the Tampa Bay junior hockey program.
