The Countryside Mall rink, on the ice three years after the centre opened in 1975
The Countryside Mall rink arrived three years after the centre itself opened on September 8, 1975. Tampa Bay Skating Academy runs it today as one of three Tampa Bay ICE facilities, a group whose rinks have served the Tampa Bay area since 1987 and that total five sheets of ice between them.
Figure skating is what the academy teaches here, from having fun and getting in shape to developing a competitive career. Its coaching staff includes USA Hockey certified coaches alongside Olympic, World and National level instructors, and the Tampa Bay Skating Club counts TBSA Countryside among its associate rinks together with Clearwater Ice Arena and the TGH Ice Plex in Brandon. In September 2013 the 11-member TBSA Countryside team brought home a first-place trophy, the Board of Directors award for the highest score among teams with 15 or fewer skaters, and placed 13th overall out of 89 rinks.
In December 2013, TBSA skaters who performed in Busch Gardens' holiday show posed at the Countryside Mall rink, where McManus, the skating director at TBSA Countryside, had also been a scout for Advanced Entertainment Group for about five years. When the centre marked 50 years in 2025, the first weekend of September brought a series of events that included ice-skating shows.
