Polk County's rink, opened in 2019 inside a former bowling alley whose 40 lanes were reused in the build.
The rink opened in 2019 as Lakeland Ice Arena inside a former bowling alley. The story goes that Joe Blanton, a former president of Publix Super Markets, built the alley for his bowling-enthusiast daughter, Kay. Memorial Interstate Properties LLC bought the building and land from Wentworth for $1.35 million, and Paul Granville used each of the old alley's 40 lanes as materials for the new rink.
The 50,000-square-foot building opened for team practices in September 2019, ahead of public skating, and at the time held the only sheet of ice in Polk County.
It was set up as home to in-house recreational and travel hockey, including the Lakeland Royals and the George Jenkins High School team, and to Florida Southern College's new Mocs hockey team, coached by the arena's hockey director, with Saturday-night games against the University of South Florida, the University of Central Florida and Stetson University.
