A City of Markham arena open since 1988
Mount Joy Community Centre opened in 1988 and is one of the City of Markham's indoor arenas with public skating. The centre consists of an indoor ice arena and a larger outdoor soccer pitch, with indoor soccer fields and an artificial turf field alongside the rink.
The arena itself is a single 85-by-200-foot sheet with seating for 300 and six dressing rooms. The City runs recreational, parent-and-tot, adults 55 and older and figure skating public skates here alongside its other arenas. The Markham Waxers count Mount Joy Arena among their venues, and the Markham Speed Skating Club uses the arena as a practice location.
The most recent change to the building is a Roadmap to Net Zero retrofit announced in February 2024 with federal support through the Canada Community-Building Fund. The project covers building envelope improvements, replacement of equipment that has reached the end of its usable life and the addition of heat recovery systems. Once complete, the upgrades are expected to cut the centre's fuel consumption by 75.7 percent and its greenhouse gas emissions by 130 tonnes a year.
