Home of the Markham Skating Club since 1963
Markham Village Arena opened in 1963 on the former site of the Markham Fair and the Wellington Hotel. The Markham Waxers moved in that year from Crosby Memorial Arena, their home since 1960, and played here until the 1970s, when they left for Markham Centennial Centre. The rink was built for hockey, with seating for 450.
The building is a single indoor pad with six dressing rooms and seating for 450 along one side. It is part of the Markham Village Community Centre, with community rooms above the rink and the Markham Village Library, added around 1981 and renovated in 2009, next door. The centre is laid out on a north-south axis, unlike the fairground's old Agricultural Hall, which ran east-west.
Figure skating has been here almost as long as the ice. Volunteers surveyed local schools in 1963 to test interest in a skating club, and the Markham Skating Club was sanctioned by the Canadian Figure Skating Association in 1964. The arena has been the club's home from its first days, and the rink built for hockey is now the skating club's, with the City of Markham's public skates on the schedule as well.
