From two rinks to a 17-acre sports campus

Nicholas Sportsplex began in 2016 as the two-rink Mount Prospect Ice Arena, built because owner Nick Papanicholas Jr.'s family saw a need for more sheets of ice in the northwest suburbs. ARCON Associates designed it, and a third sheet of ice was built in only seven months.

The arena grew into a 17-acre sports campus, adding a multipurpose gym across the street in 2019 and, in spring 2020, Nicholas Field, with more than 59,000 square feet of outdoor synthetic turf. The 104,000-square-foot arena itself has three regulation NHL sheets and a hockey store.

In September 2020 the Reapers, a new Tier I program founded by former Falcons Hockey Association president Steven Dry, made the arena its home, with eight team locker rooms and a players' lounge. It is also home to Hornets Sled Hockey, for players with physical disabilities, and to the hockey teams of Saint Viator High School, the Papanicholas siblings' alma mater, and Notre Dame College Prep.
