A 1967 college field house turned city rink

Albert Lea’s City Arena began as the field house for Lea College, built in 1967. When the college closed, the city bought the building and converted it to an ice arena in 1976. A second sheet of ice, paid for by the Albert Lea Hockey Association, opened in 1999.

The building covers almost 100,000 square feet and holds two sheets, the Nystrom and Colstrup arenas. It is home to the Albert Lea High School girls’ and boys’ hockey teams, the Albert Lea Hockey Association’s youth teams, the Albert Lea Figure Skating Club and Waldorf University men’s hockey. It is the city’s most-used facility, with nearly 50,000 visitors a year, most of them for hockey games and tournaments.

Besides public skating, the arena runs Mites hockey, learn-to-skate lessons and themed nights such as Rock on Ice. A voter-backed renovation is under way to expand the lobby and upgrade building systems, including the refrigeration that makes the ice. When the ice is out, the arena hosts indoor soccer, dog shows and banquets.
