Opened November 3, 1996 with a state Mighty Ducks grant and a board of city, school and hockey members
The Faribault Ice Arena opened on November 3, 1996. Faribault was the first of 88 communities to apply to Minnesota's Mighty Ducks arena program, and it won a grant from the fund in the fall of 1995. In all, 344 donors gave to the project.
The 33,000-square-foot building has one 200-by-85-foot sheet with seating for 350, and the city required a concrete floor so it could be used year-round. Mayor Jeanette Hammond cut the ribbon alongside the high school's boys and girls teams and youth hockey players and figure skaters. A nine-member Ice Arena Association, with equal representation from the city, the school district and the Faribault Hockey Association, oversees the building.
Beyond hockey tournaments and ice time for school hockey programs, the arena hosts events such as the Good Sam Jamboree and the annual TRAM get-together.
