Two indoor sheets, one Olympic-size with bleachers for 1,000, and the annual Hockey Day New Ulm
The New Ulm Civic Center keeps two indoor ice sheets. One is a regulation 85-by-200-foot rink with bleacher seating for 300; the other is an Olympic-size 100-by-200-foot sheet with bleachers for 1,000. Eight team rooms serve the two rinks, and an upper-level concourse holds common areas, seating and concessions. The building also rents out dry floor space for banquets, shows and expos.
New Ulm High School's Eagles boys' and girls' teams play varsity and JV games here, as do New Ulm youth teams from 8U through Bantams. The annual Hockey Day New Ulm fills both the North and South rinks with a full day of games; the January 2024 edition was the fifth. After the 2025 event, the high school's hockey coaching staffs wrote that the Civic Center was packed from the get-go until the evening autograph session. Away from hockey, the ice is also used for open skating, figure skating and open broomball.
From 2016 the building was also home to the New Ulm Steel, an NA3HL junior team that arrived from the Minnesota metro area and averaged more than 260 fans per home game. The Steel's five-year lease on the Civic Center ran out in March 2023, when the franchise was sold to out-of-state owners who planned to move it to Tomah, Wisconsin.
