Dave Torrey Arena opened in 1972; the parallel Ritsche Arena joined it in December 1997
The MAC's original ice sheet opened in November 1972, and for more than 15 years it was the only sheet within a 30-mile radius. It first hosted three area high schools, the St. Cloud State and St. John's University hockey programs, and the area's youth hockey and figure skating groups.
An extensive renovation in 1994 went ahead without the building missing a day of business. A second, parallel arena opened in December 1997, designed so the two could run as one facility or separately, and on July 23, 1998, the original was dedicated as Dave Torrey Arena and the newer sheet as Ritsche Arena. Torrey seats 2,000 and Ritsche 400, both on 200-by-85-foot ice with geo-exchange refrigeration since 2008.
Today the arenas are home to three high school teams, the St. Cloud Youth Hockey Association and the St. Cloud Figure Skating Club, and groups book more than 3,100 blocks of ice time a year.
