The same plan, “let’s go ice skating,” leads to three different arrival routines in Arlington, Fairfax and Reston. MedStar asks you to enrol before arriving. Fairfax sells ordinary public tickets at the rink. SkateQuest publishes its own public-event schedule and rental price.
Understanding that difference is a good start to choosing a Northern Virginia outing. The comparison below is for recreational public ice, with practical reasons to consider each location rather than a claim that one is the best rink for every skater.
MedStar for a visit arranged before you leave
MedStar Capitals Iceplex’s public-skate instructions ask participants to create an account and enrol before arrival. Its booking system uses drop-in events, so follow the public-skate category rather than selecting a lesson or another ice program with a similar time.
Figure and hockey rental skates are available, but the rink does not allow cones, buckets or walkers during public skating. Carrying children on the ice is also prohibited. Those are useful distinctions for someone planning a toddler’s first outing or assuming that a skating aid comes with admission.
Some named programs have their own eligibility, including an adult session for ages 21 and older. That does not make the ordinary public schedule adults-only. Read the event name and conditions together, especially when booking several family members.

Fairfax for a ticket bought at the counter
Fairfax Ice Arena lists weekday public admission at $10.25 and weekend or holiday admission at $11.25. Skate rental adds $4, making the listed combinations $14.25 and $15.25.
Public tickets are sold in person, starting 30 minutes before the session. That is a different process from MedStar’s advance enrolment. A group of seven or more has separate booking instructions, including advance notice; an ordinary individual visit should not be confused with that group arrangement.
The current fall schedule covers August 29 through October 31 and includes holiday exceptions. Check the dated entry for a school day off instead of assuming the usual Monday timetable applies. The arena’s year-round operation does not remove those session-level changes.

SkateQuest for a Reston public session
SkateQuest’s public-event page lists public skating at $10 plus $4 rental. Its $14 listed combination gives someone borrowing skates a straightforward comparison with Fairfax, provided both calendars offer a useful session that day.
The facility’s main site describes both NHL-size and Olympic-size ice, alongside a café and pro shop. Those features explain the setting, but they do not tell you which sheet a particular public skate will use. Follow the event rather than assuming both rinks are available to the same ticket.
SkateQuest also has lessons and other programmed ice. A public skate is the recreational opening to look for when the goal is a casual outing; a lesson is a separate purchase for someone who wants instruction.

Plan around the correct entry process
Use the Northern Virginia public-skate schedule to compare openings, then complete the rink’s own next step. For MedStar that means the account and enrolment process. For Fairfax it means allowing time for counter sales and rentals. For SkateQuest it means checking the current public-event listing.
The price differences are small enough that location and timing may decide the trip. Equipment needs can be more decisive, especially where a beginner is counting on an aid that the rink does not permit. None of the published information establishes how busy a future session will be, so choose a workable visit without relying on an empty-ice assumption.
