Winnipeg’s free indoor public skates offer a way onto the ice before an outdoor winter outing is an option. The important word is “scheduled.” A municipal arena can be operating for booked groups without offering a public skate that day.
At our September 17 review, the published fall public-skating schedules for Eric Coy, Century and Sam Southern had not started yet. Their first listed dates fall on September 27 or 28. These are useful places to plan a fall visit, not a promise of free ice this afternoon.
Eric Coy for a west-side Sunday or weekday skate
Eric Coy Arena, at 535 Oakdale Drive, publishes a free-skating season from September 27 through December 16, with Sunday and Wednesday openings. September 30 and November 11 are listed exceptions. Use the individual calendar entry for the time rather than treating the season’s date range as daily access.
The arena’s main ice surface measures 85 by 200 feet. Its substantial seating capacity describes spectators, not the number of people expected on a public skate. Neither a large stand nor a free ticket establishes how crowded your session will be.
This is the west-side option to compare if a Sunday or midweek outing fits your routine. The city lists wheelchair access to the lobby; anyone needing a particular route to the ice or changing facilities should confirm that arrangement before travelling.

Century for a Monday routine
Century Arena, at 1377 Clarence Avenue, gives a different answer to the scheduling question. Its published free-skating season runs on Mondays from September 28 through December 14, excluding October 12.
That makes it worth comparing when the other two rinks’ Sunday and Wednesday pattern is inconvenient. The calendar difference is more useful than a broad ranking of the buildings: an arena with the right opening is the one a family can actually use.
Century also has a full-size 85-by-200-foot ice surface. Read its public-skating entry separately from facility rentals and other ice bookings. A building calendar full of hockey does not mean there is no public program, but it does mean you need the correct event.

Sam Southern for an Osborne Street option
Sam Southern Arena, at 625 Osborne Street, publishes Sunday and Wednesday free skates from September 27 through December 16, with September 30 and November 11 excluded.
The city lists wheelchair access to both the lobby and change rooms. That is a specific facility feature worth considering alongside the journey and session time. It is not a promise that every individual assistance need can be met without discussion.
Sam Southern’s smaller spectator seating figure should not be confused with a smaller skating surface. Its ice is also listed at 85 by 200 feet. Choose it for a workable location and public opening, rather than interpreting spectator capacity as a crowd forecast.

Bring the equipment for an ordinary public skate
The city’s rink pages strongly recommend CSA-approved helmets. They prohibit carrying children or giving piggyback rides on the ice, and do not allow strollers or hockey play during these public sessions. Training bars are not provided.
Those rules matter when “free skating” is the plan for a child’s first attempt. Admission alone does not supply the equipment or support that a lesson might provide. Start with the Winnipeg public-skate schedule, keep the opening dates in mind, and confirm the selected arena’s calendar before leaving home.
