NHL-size ice and seating for 800 in the town where the Sutter brothers learned the game
The name Carena goes back to Viking's first arena, which began construction in 1951. To pay for it, organizers bought 12 cars as raffle prizes and drew one ticket each month for a year; a second car raffle followed, and the new arena was nicknamed the CAR-ena for that fundraising. The Sutter brothers, six of whom played in the NHL, grew up learning the game in the old Carena, and Glen Sather was among the other notables who spent time on its ice.
In the summer of 2005 a fire gutted the old Carena and left Viking, a town of about 1,000 people, without a rink. Stage one of the new building opened in 2007 and was named the Carena to carry on the old arena's legacy; stage two followed in 2008 with the library, meeting room, fitness centre, walking track and playschool.
The complex's main feature is its NHL-size ice surface, with bowl seating for up to 800 and standing room for 400 more. The second-floor walking and running track overlooks the ice, as does the Indoor Activity Centre with its large playground, and the Carena Kitchen serves lunch and take-out during key hours.
