Newcastle Memorial Arena, Newcastle, Ontario
Newcastle Memorial Arena began in 1948, when the Newcastle Veterans Association announced its dream of a living memorial to the local boys who gave their lives defending the country in the two world wars. The town rallied behind the idea with fundraising events, door-to-door canvassing and a raffle for a 1950 Studebaker, and volunteers gave their time every weekend to lay the floor and erect the trusses. The arena opened its doors on February 26, 1951.
Artificial ice was installed in 1967. In 1977 the original building was demolished to make way for a new, larger arena to better serve the growing community, and the brand-new arena officially opened on April 8, 1978. After extensive renovations over the course of several months in 2023, it held a grand reopening on November 25.
Today the arena is home to the Newcastle Stars of the Newcastle Village Minor Hockey Association. The pad runs as an ice surface from September to March, and public sessions, including a free Parent & Tot Skate and a free Adult skate, are posted on its calendar.
